Aegina's port, located in island's capital, is where the island's heart beats during summer. There is a coastal connection to Piraeus Port through ferry-routes, that are increased on summer. You can now book ferry tickets online for Aegina via Aktoploika.gr. If you plan to travel during July and August, it's best if you have booked several days or weeks earlier to avoid hitches. You should also know that round-trip/return ferry tickets come with a considerable discount.
Transportation
Aegina offers all types of transportation, but using the local buses is the cheapest way. There are routes to everywhere, the net is well organized and able to cover all the passengers' needs. Routes aren't often, even during summer no more than 5 or six a day per course, but ticket prices are very low (1.8 – 2 euros). You can buy your ticket in Ethnegersias Square, by the port, where the bus start is, or inside the bus. Routes and time-tables can be found at the bus-start.
Bicycles and scooters are the second most popular way of transportation. Locals don't exaggerate, when they claim that for each of them there is one scooter in the island. Roads are in good condition and flexibility in riding will help you see more sights and save time.
Aegina: a paradise full of senses and experiences
Aegina owes its name to a love story, that comes from Greek Mythology. When Zeus fall in love with Aegina, Asopos' daughter, he kidnapped her and brought her to Oinoni Island, which took her name. Every interest or wish can be fulfilled in Aegina, considering monuments and historical places, nature beauties, or just a time of silence and relax on the beach. Starting from the most famous, we must refer to Afaia Athena Temple, Palaiohora, the island's medieval capital with the 33 chapels and the excellent view, the Agios Nektarios Monastery, the Aegina's patron located 6 kilometers outside Aegina City, Perdika, a fishers-village, where you can enjoy fresh fish, and across that Moni Island with its magnificent beach.
Walking through the city's scenic alleys is something worth trying, as you'll have the chance to see some beautiful 19th century preservable buildings with their whitewashed gardens full of flowers.
The island's beaches are countless, so we'll mention the most popular. Agia Marina Beach is 15 kilometers away from Aegina City, a Blue Flag Award Holder and perhaps the best one, with plenty of facilities. Klima Beach is also very famous, as well as Marathonas Beach 5 kilometers away from the city. Aiginitissa Beach is the first choice in young ages, especially on weekends, with a lot of taverns, restaurants, pubs and night-clubs.
As you move across the island, you'll have the chance to see the big peanuts crops, that have made the island famous all over the world.
Aegina's "must"
- Enjoy a ride with a traditional carriage to Aegina City's seaside road. You'll feel royal.
- Taste and procure the famous "Aegina peanuts". These are the original ones, also available in candies and sweets.
- Enjoy yogurt with peanuts, served in a galley-plate, in "Panorama Restaurant" in Agia Marina Beach.
- Visit Perdika Beach and try the village's specialty "katsoules" in any restaurant or tavern. It's a delicious fish available only in Argosaronikos Gulf.
- If you visit Aiginitissa Beach, ask for a "Peanut Mojito". It's the famous cocktail enriched with peanut-sweet. One won't be enough.
- Ask a local to show you the road to Aegina Ancient Olive Grove. It's near Palaiohora and it has olive trees aged over 400 years old.
- You will find many ice-cream parlours, serving high quality ice creams. Try the "peanut ice-cream" (what else?) in the ice-cream parlour next to Aegina City Stadium on the sea road. This flavor travels even to Canada's Vancouver.
Don't forget
If you choose to move by car, have in mind that Aegina City suffers from heavy traffic during summer time. Most roads are narrow and the sea-road is pedestrianized every night, making the situation more difficult. You'll also face difficulties in parking and may be forced to park your car in one of the two free parking areas, each located in the city's exits to Souvala and Marathonas. If you travel with your own car, make sure you have booked your return, especially if Sunday is the return day, because Sundays are the days most passengers choose to return to Piraeus. If you wish to rent a car, plan and book it as soon as possible, because during July and August there are no cars for rent.
In case you choose to move by scooter, don't forget to wear a helmet and be careful on every turn you meet on the road.
