With it's roads' length being no more than 15 kilometers, and a perfectly organized transportation net, with buses and municipal mini-buses, moving around Lipsoi is the last thing, that will bother you. Tickets' prices are too low (a little more than 1 euro), service is perfect, the employees are very friendly and the routes frequency too high, connecting each other the island's few settlements and beaches. There is, as well, for the more romantic ones, the "bicycle option", that will offer you more freedom in your moves.
A life experience
It's not about an island, but a cluster of Islands. The main island, with 16 square. km. area and approximately 700 residents, gave its name to the whole cluster and can serve as a starting point for getting to know the rest, all belonging to the Natura 2000 environmental network. Quiet island, with low hills, full of benches and small, subtle beaches, ideal for relaxing holidays.
In the port and the island's unique settlement, you will see the Nikiforio Ecclesiastical Museum, housed in the Town Hall, with religious and folkloric exhibits, the archaeological collection of vases and inscriptions on slabs and columns of classical, Hellenistic and Christian era and also the lending library. At Kuselio you will find monuments from the early Christian era. At the highest point of the island, the Castle, the ruins of the Acropolis are talking about the past of the island. On the island there are 'so many churches as the families', at least as it is said. It is worth mentioning the Virgin of Charos for its architectural rhythm, island-Byzantine, dating from the 11th-12th century. It took its name from the icon of the Virgin Mary that holds in her arms Jesus Crucified and not as infant.
The island is ideal for bird-watching. The rocks and the seaside caves offer shelter for the rare egeoglaro, which has an entire rookery in Lipsi and in the islets of Makronisi and Aspronisi. Also, you'll notice the migratory Eleonora's Falcon, also known as varvaki. Ιt nests in rookeries, mostly in uninhabited islets or in inaccessible cliffs.
Here you will savour fava bean balls, coils, fried pies, calamari with black rice, tomatoes, spinialo, fuskalo, pitarudia, grilled or fried pouches, ksinomizithra, and touloumisio. Always, of course, with the local wine.
Leipsoi's "musts"
- If you don't want to, or couldn't find somewhere to stay on the island, you can camp on Katsadia. It's one of Leipsoi's most idyllic places, with many fans and a special meeting point to enjoy tasteful choices, the "Dilaila Cafe-Resturant" with its excellent food and sweet menu.
- A beach, special for its natural beauty and crystal water, is Platis Gialos, accessible by car and ideal for families.
- Have a daily cruise in the islands around Leipsoi with a small boat you'll find at the port and discover mystic beaches and exotic landscapes in Marathi, Tiganakia and Aspronisi, three small islands.
- The island's restaurants and taverns have nothing to be jealous of compared to those in Aegean's cosmopolitan islands. Among them, "Giannis Tavern", located on the port, is by far a special place, offering excellent quality and huge portions.
- If you choose Platis Gialos to swim, have your lunch in the homonym tavern. You'll be able to enjoy excellent cooked and many seafood meals, all of them prepared in a unique way.
- Try the delicious local wine, made from the island's vineyards in Panagia Harou.
Don't forget
Even distances are too small across the island, in case you decide to drive a car, be very careful, as Leipsoi is full of wild rabbits, that show up in the middle of the road out of nowhere.
Most beaches don't have any shade, so if you are seeking sun protection, you must carry your own sea-umbrella with you.
If you intend to stay on the island, search and book a room as soon as possible, as there are very few rooms.
Happy Holidays in Lipsi!!!
