The island of Apollo

Picturesque bays, leeward beaches, coves, chapels, all these together, give a special image of Sifnos. One image that attracts the visitor.  And its soil suitable to develop the pottery.

Most settlements are concentrated in the island's central plateau and the oldest is the Castle, typical example of the Venetian architecture. The Castle retains even today its medieval character. Perched on a steep cliff, to the eastern side of the island, remains one of the most beautiful areas of the island and certainly the best place to enjoy the sunset.

A big part of the island has been included in the European network of protected areas, Natura 2000, while the North Sifnos is included in the Important Bird Areas of Greece. Here you will find rare species such as the peregrine falcon and the Hobbies. To enjoy the beauties of the Sifno's landscape, it's worth to walk marching in intact ancient paths.

In Artemonas, you will find neoclassical mansions with flower gardens. From Glifo starts one of the most walked cobblestone paths of Sifnos, that leads to Apokofto Beach and Chrissopigi, with the deep bluegreen water. In the beach of Kamares there is a possibility of renting equipment for wind surfing.

Apollonia, the island's capital, is built amphitheatrically on three hills. Wander around the cobblestone streets and enjoy the harmony of colors. White-washed houses with flower gardens on the rooftops, next to small chapels with ornate steeples!
Fifty five ancient towers scattered throughout the island. Built from the 6th to the 3rd centuries BC, functioned as beacons, were sending smoke and fire signal in the ancient citadels. The best surviving tower of Sifnos is the White Tower, on the road to Platis Gialos.

Sifnos' "musts"

  • A night-walk in Artemonas, the traditional settlement with the picturesque alleys and the preserved buildings. This is where you'll find ceramic utensils and ornaments shops.
  • A trip to "Narlis Farm" in Kato Petali village. You'll be guided to the vegetables' biological cultivation, gather some and learn how to use them in local recipes.
  • Vroulidia beach on the north is not only one of the island's most famous beaches, but has many secret surprises and it's one of the few Cyclades beaches, that are very easy to reach them.
  • You'll have the best walk on the island's west side, at the Natura area with the centenarian trees, the wild flowers, the herbs, the chapels and the ancient remains. You'll definitely need more than a day to see the basic ones.
  • Sifnos is the birthplace of the biggest Greek chef Nikos Tselementes, so anything local or new in food is another surprise. You must definitely try "revithada" and "mastelo" and buy some "manoura" a spicy kind of cheese, that is preserved in wine's sediments.

Don't forget
Sifnos has many places to swim, but only some are suitable for families. In some beaches you'll have to sit on rocks, while others are not easy to be accessed by kids. Ask a local for more info, before you go anywhere.

In protected areas, such as the island's west forest, throwing garbage is strictly forbidden, as well as fire starting. The place is guarded and penalties are too heavy.

In many cases you'll have to walk, to find a beach. Make sure to wear sneakers and not sandals or flip-flops.
